Danger, massive amounts of data ahead; eScience Institute can help
The UW’s new eScience Institute will be launched with a special event from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Microsoft Atrium of the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering. The institute is designed to offer a universitywide data analysis capability with expertise in high-performance computing, data management and data discovery.

Machala brings spirit of entrepreneurship to UW
Janis Machala, a local veteran start-up expert, will be joining UW TechTransfer to lead and expand LaunchPad Services, a three-year old program to help UW faculty and graduate students who want to start their own companies. She’ll also be creating a new program, Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, to bring experts from Seattle-area companies to campus.

From academic to artist: Richey retires to new career
After a full academic career teaching in the School of Social Work, painting called to Cheryl Richey. She made a life change and now paints full-time in retirement. Her work will be shown in the Waters Alive! show by the Women Painters of Washington, opening Nov. 4 at the Columbia Center.
Work of 16 photographers featured in HUB Gallery

Like rest of society, doctors implicitly favor whites over blacks
In the first large study to explore possible unconscious bias among physicians, researchers have found that doctors mirror the attitudes of the majority in society and implicitly favor whites over blacks.
Scientists find evidence of tsunamis on Indian Ocean shores long before 2004
When a tsunami inundated Indian Ocean coastlines in 2004, many people died — in part because they didn’t know the area’s history. A UW researcher has found evidence of other tsunamis there in the past and argues that knowledge of those events could have helped some 2004 victims recognize warning signs and flee before the waves arrived.

Quilting started as a minor hobby for UW staffer Joan Hanson in the late ‘70s. But hundreds of quilts later, she now has a quilting room instead of a dining room.
