Provost to hold budget conversation May 8
Faculty and staff are invited to join Provost Phyllis Wise from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 8, for a drop-in conversation at the UW Club about the status of the state budget and the University's plans for dealing with it.

Alvin Kwiram calls it a story of perseverance. Connie Kravas calls it a surprising success. Whatever it's called, the UW now has added more than $13 million over the past 3 1/2 years to scholarships, fellowships and other endowed support for students.
Emergency procedures practiced, evaluated in Operation Crash Start disaster drill
If an emergency occurs on campus, how will the UW respond? Representatives of a number of campus departments gathered at the UW Emergency Operations Center in the Bryant Building on Thursday, April 30, to study that question in an afternoon-long disaster drill called Operation Crash Start.
Staiger appointed UWMC medical director
Dr. Tom Staiger has been named medical director of UW Medical Center. He has been serving as interim director since July 2008.
Jay Inslee to serve as commencement speaker for UW Bothell
U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee will be the speaker at UW Bothell’s commencement June 14. Inslee, a graduate of the UW, is a strong supporter of higher education.

Drama, music schools team up for Tchaikovsky opera ‘Eugene Onegin’
A "quietly sad and introspective work," says its director — Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin is a dual production by the schools of drama and music.
Second BFA show opens at Lawrence gallery
The second show of the spring, May 13-30, at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery will feature the BFA graduates working in fibers, sculpture, ceramics or painting.
UW-created American String Project to perform at Benaroya Hall May 14, 16, 17
For this unique group, Barry Lieberman recruits musicians from “the most elite orchestras, universities and chamber groups” to perform three concerts of string music written for the smaller ensemble. Performances are coming up at Benaroya Hall.
Jazz, guitar and world music coming from School of Music students
The School of Music’s students of jazz, guitar and ethnomusicology will offer public performances in three separate events in coming days.

UW will be prominent in space shuttle mission to service Hubble telescope
The space shuttle Atlantis, leaving Monday for the Hubble Space Telescope, will be piloted by UW engineering graduate Gregory C. Johnson. The shuttle will carry a camera that UW astronomers helped build, which will replace Hubble's existing camera.
Better diets more costly, enjoyed by the most educated
UW researchers find that college-education women have better diets, but pay more for each calorie consumed.

‘El Ultimo.’ A bilingual production by Teatro Milagro that takes place in Patagonia and explores the power struggle when nature, indigenous Mapuche Shamans and timber interests collide. The story is based on real events and challenges the audience to reflect on environmental justice, indigenous rights and sustainability.

Education Open House. The College of Education holds its Spring Open House to introduce participants to its undergraduate and graduate programs. Diversity honored. The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity and the Friends of the Educational Opportunity Program present their annual celebration, fete and honors. Ron Allen, chairman of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe.
