Many ideas received but more are welcome as administrators ponder UW’s budget
When the Provost’s Office sent out a plea for ideas about how the UW can cut costs and increase efficiency, more than 220 came in. But the Office of Planning and Budgeting is still interested in hearing from faculty and staff — especially front-line people who are responsible for implementing policies and procedures.
Christy Gullion appointed UW director of federal relations
Christy Gullion, who has nearly two decades of experience working for a variety of federal, state and local agencies, has been appointed the director of federal relations. She will be the University's chief representative in Washington, D.C.
New Housing and Food Services director named
Pamela Schreiber, who has extensive experience in housing at large institutions, has been selected as the UW’s new director of housing and food services.
A reminder: OSP has a new two-day advance deadline for all proposals
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) would like to remind campus departments and units that it now requires lead time of two days or more for submission of the final version of all grant and contract applications. The new policy will become effective for sponsor deadlines of Jan. 22 or later.

World music featured in Jan. 20 concert
Donna Shin, a flutist and faculty artist at the School of Music, and Alexandra Nguyen, a pianist from the University of Colorado at Boulder, will perform music from around the world — highlighting the European virtuoso, sounds from the Orient and dance inspirations from Latin America — in a recital Jan. 20.
JACK Quartet to perform Jan. 16 at School of Music
The JACK Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in Brechemin Auditorium in the Music Building.
Bassist Scott Pingel to offer master class, concert Jan. 21
Scott Pingel, principal double bassist for the San Francisco Symphony, will conduct a master class with students of Barry Lieberman, followed by a brief recital with pianist Rie Ando of works by Schubert, Bach and more, at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Brechemin Auditorium.

Teacher contracts not so inflexible, study shows
Collective bargaining agreements are not necessarily the barriers to reforming the nation’s high schools that many educators believe they are, according to a new study from the UW’s Center on Reinventing Public Education.

John L. Hancock, professor emeritus of urban planning, to be remembered Jan. 23
Family and friends of John L. Hancock, emeritus professor of urban planning, will gather at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in Gould Hall Court, to remember him. Hancock died Dec. 7 at the age of 78.

Freeze! UWPD promotes Polar Plunge for Special Olympics on Jan. 31
Some cops tell you to pull over and some cops tell you to move along — but Sgt. Cham Kao of the UW Police is telling you to go jump in the lake. Lake Washington, that is. And really, he’s just asking. He’s promoting an event called the Polar Plunge, and it’s all for a good cause.
Grad school seeks to increase recruitment of underrepresented students with improvements to National Name Exchange
A recent grant will enable the UW Graduate School to improve the National Name Exchange, a consortium designed to increase the number of qualified minority students accepted into grad school.
History Lecture Series to discuss The Vatican in the 20th century
History Professor James Felak will deliver a five-part lecture series, “The Vatican in the 20th Century: The Popes Confront a Turbulent World,” beginning Jan. 20.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. to meet with UW law students
Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., a leading authority on African American history and culture, will meet with UW School of Law students for an informal Q&A session from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at William H. Gates Hall.
Puppets and prosthetics featured in Meet the Charities event Jan. 30
The Prosthetics Outreach Foundation will be featured in the January installment of Meet the Charities, monthly events presented by the UW Combined Fund Drive, Washington state’s workplace giving campaign.

The JACK Quartet. They push the boundaries of the most demainding string quartet repertoire with what the Chicago Sun-Times called "powerhouse playing." The name comes from members' first names. John, Ari, Christopher and Kevin.

A day on, for Dr. King. The Martin Luther King Day of Service begins with a kickoff celebration for students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends.
