Watching violence on TV linked to later trouble for young boys
Early viewing of violent television programs is linked to later aggressive and anti-social behavior in boys and doubles the risk of future childhood attention problems, according to a pair of new studies by UW authors published in the November issue of Pediatrics.

Expanding opportunity: New associate vice provost looks to increase diversity of UW faculty
Luis Fraga was recently recruited as the UW’s associate vice provost for faculty advancement. The position is a new one, and is intended to encourage the recruitment, retention and promotion of historically underrepresented faculty, as well as faculty who do research on what might be called historically underserved, understudied and underrepresented communities.

Organ, piano concerts set this week
Kathrine Handford will perform an organ concernt at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Walker-Ames Room of Kane. And Gregory Partain, professor of piano at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Brechemin Auditorium.

100 years and counting: Forest Resources celebrates centennial with research showcase, gala
Tuition early on was $10 a semester and courses ranged from wood technology – including learning how to recognize the commercial timbers of the United States and know their properties – to forest protection, which mainly concerned how to thwart fungi, insect pests and forest fires on timberlands. That was 100 years ago, when the College of Forest Resources began. The college celebrated that marker with a research showcase and gala.
Solar power documentary to be shown Nov. 19
A documentary film on solar power, the brainchild of Nobel Prize winner Walter Kohn, will be shown Nov. 19 in Kane Hall, and Kohn will lead a question-and-answer session afterward.

Stephen P. Zieniewicz is the new executive director for UW Medical Center. He is providing executive leadership for the hospital and serves as a member of the senior leadership team for UW Medicine.
Fenske wins top environmental, occupational health award
Richard Fenske, professor and associate chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, has been recognized for his contributions to the assessment and mitigation of human exposure to chemical hazards.

Too much stress and anxiety in your life? Dr. Uma Malhotra, UW assistant professor of medicine, allergy and infectious disease, may be able to help. Since April, Malhotra has been offering meditation classes at Harborview Medical Center for faculty, staff and the public.
UW physician Nassim Assefi publishes debut novel
Nassim Assefi, UW clinical instructor of medicine and of obstetrics and gynecology, had her first novel, Aria, published this year by Harcourt.
UWMC to provide patient housing at Collegiana
UW Medical Center (UWMC) took ownership of the Collegiana, a small former inn located across 12th Avenue N.E. and just north of N.E. 43rd Street, several months ago as part of the University’s move to the UW Tower properties formerly owned by Safeco.
Pediatric students learn Hutterite approach to health care
Third-year medical students in the Great Falls, Mont., pediatrics clerkship have several opportunities to learn about health in the community, in addition to training at hospitals and clinics. Among these is a visit to the Fairhaven Hutterite Colony in Ulm, Mont., about 20 miles away.
