Some biofuels might do more harm than good to the environment, study finds
Biofuels are increasingly popular with government and environmentalists as a way to reduce fossil fuel dependence and limit greenhouse gas emissions. But new UW-led research shows that some of the most popular current biofuel stocks might have exactly the opposite impacts from what's intended.

Richard Penny has been named vice chancellor for advancement and external relations at UW Bothell. In this newly formed role, he will oversee development, public relations and communications, alumni relations, and government and community affairs.

‘Synthesis’: The Visual Arts 2008 Senior Exhibition
The UW Interdisciplinary Visual Arts program will present its 2008 Senior Exhibiton, titled Synthesis, June 11 to 14 at the School of Art’s Sandpoint Gallery in Seattle’s Magnuson Park. The works are the students’ capstone projects, the culmination of four years of study.
A variety of styles on stage this week from School of Music
American folk songs, gospel numbers with special guests, chamber singing and an evening of performance from combined UW choirs all are among events being presented by the UW School of Music in the next week.
Jazz from School of Music on June 4, 7
Looking for some jazz for a warm spring evening? The School of Music has two offerings for jazzoids in coming days — instrumental groups on June 4 and vocal groups on June 7.
School of Music offers Spring Opera Workshop June 5
Music students will perform scenes from Leonard Bernstein's opera, Trouble in Tahiti, and Seymour Barab's one-act opera, A Game of Chance.
World music from the UW Percussion Ensemble and friends June 3
Drums will sound from the Meany Studio Theater when the School of Music presents World Percussion, featuring the UW Percussion Ensemble, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3.

Fire’s aftermath: Students to return to Greece to report on media coverage of government
Last August, despite some scary moments, Taso Lagos and the students he’d taken to Greece for a study program survived wildfires raging across the country. This summer, the UW lecturer in communication is taking another group to Greece, to report on the aftermath of what has been described as Greece's 9/11.

Neal Futran named chair of Otolaryngology
Dr. Neal Futran, professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, will become the new chair of the UW Department of Otolaryngology on June 1.
Broudy and Elkon appointed to endowed professorships
Dr. Virginia Broudy is the first holder of the Scripps Endowed Professorship in Hematology. Dr. Keith B. Elkon will hold the first Mart Mannik, M.D.-Lucile T. Henderson Endowed Professorship in Rheumatology.
Krebs Lecture to mark birthday and new pharmacology professorship
Dr. John Scott, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Oregon Health & Science University, will give the annual Krebs Lecture June 3.
C. Everett Koop to be honored at Children's Hospital June 4
Dr. C. Everett Koop, former Surgeon General of the United States, will be the featured speaker at a celebration of the Herbert E. Coe Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery at UW Medicine on June 4.
