World War II era Japanese American students get honorary degrees
There were about 440 Japanese American students at the UW in 1942 when FDR signed Executive Order 9066, sending Japanese Americans into internment camps. Now, the UW Regents have voted to offer honorary degrees to students who were at the UW at that time of mass exclusion and incarceration.

School of Art Open in Jacob Lawrence Gallery
The School of Art Open exhibit, a competitive, juried show that draws from the work of a diverse range of graduate and undergraduate students, opens this week in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, and will run through March 16.

Students choreograph upcoming dance concert
The Dance Program will present its annual showcase of new work by undergraduate students March 6–9 in the Meany Studio Theater. This year the dance majors present nine new works by student choreographers who have completed the full series of UW composition coursework. Each piece exhibits unique movements that draw from various creative processes and methods of choreography.

Puttin' on the Ritz at Meany
The Ritz Chamber Players will make their Meany Hall debut at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, as part of the UW World Series. Founded in 2002, the group performs works from the traditional European repertoire as well as by contemporary African American composers.

Bells will be ringing in Gerberding tower this spring
Construction is beginning this week to make way for a set of eight bells to be installed in the tower of Gerberding Hall. The bells, a gift from an anonymous donor, are designed for "change ringing," a method that produces a pattern of different tones rather than a tune.

Rainier Vista: Changes are in the works
Some changes are in the works for Rainier Vista. The swath of land from Red Square to the Montlake Triangle, with its stunning view of Mount Rainier, has long been one of the iconic images of the University, but in March, a landscape architecture firm that is serving as a consultant will present its final proposal on what should be done for the future.

Watching classes at the Academy for Citizenship and Empowerment in Sea-Tac, it's not obvious that the school got help from the UW’s Center for Educational Leadership. But talk to the teachers and the coaching and motivation provided by the center shines through quickly.

Dalai Lama to speak with students
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will speak with students from regional public and private universities and community colleges from 3 to 5 p.m. April 14 in the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson. The University will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for humanitarianism, his advocacy of nonviolence and his promotion of compassion, responsibility and understanding.
