College of the Environment: UW proposes bold initiative as part of legislative request
One of the UW’s supplementary budget requests to the Legislature this session would provide money to begin preliminary work on what is perhaps the boldest new initiative the University has put forward in years — a new College of the Environment. Public forums on the notion will be held in February.

Cuong Vu and trio to jazz it up in Meany Feb. 6
Cuong Vu, who recently joined the UW School of Music as assistant professor of jazz studies, will perform his own compositions with his trio at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Meany Theater.
'She Stoops to Conquer' next up for drama school
The UW School of Drama presents Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer, a hilarious comedy of errors about class, courtship and dysfunctional families Feb. 3-17 in Meany Studio Theatre.
Pacific Northwest Band Festival Feb. 4-5
Select middle school and high school student band musicians will perform with the UW Wind Ensemble, directed by Timothy Salzman, during the 20th Annual Pacific Northwest Band Festival Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 4 and 5, at Meany Hall.

Arctic lecture on Feb. 12
Last fall ice covered less of the Arctic Ocean than had ever been recorded before and the temperatures of the ocean rose as much as 5 degrees C above average. Those dramatic changes and why they matter to the rest of the world will be the subject of a lecture Feb. 12, the first of three in the series “Arctic Adventure: Ocean Tales of Currents and Creatures.”
Julian Bond to speak at UW on Feb. 6
Julian Bond, chairman of the NAACP, will speak on “Civil Rights, Then and Now” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in 130 Kane.
Meeting focus is women in science
On Saturday, dozens of women interested in careers in math, science and technology will gather in the HUB for the 17th annual conference by the Women in Science and Engineering office. The day-long event provides networking opportunities and career advice, as well as tips on how to balance school, work and other responsibilities.
Rare plant care subject of talk
More than 370 plant species in Washington are considered rare, threatened or endangered. Sarah Reichard, associate professor of forest resources, will talk about some of the reasons in a lecture, “Rare Plant Conservation in the Pacific Northwest,” at 7 p .m. Feb. 7 in 120 Kane.

The Comparative Religion Program and The Center for Global Studies present Prof. Martin Riesebrodt from the University of Chicago speaking on Globalization, Religion, and the 'Clash of Civilizations', at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in 220 Kane.

Training sessions offered for campus violence prevention and response
The UW Advisory Committee on Violence Prevention is sponsoring a series of informational meetings for the campus community. The sessions focus on recognizing the warning signs of violence and on how to respond in such situations, including details about the University’s policies and its many available resources.
