Sachi Takeda, left, and Kelly Staton get the Jacob Lawrence Gallery ready Friday for its new exhibit, Spirit of Mexico: Posada, Political Prints and Folk Retablos, a display of Mexican graphic art from 1900 to the present. The show opened Wednesday and will run through Feb. 16. Takeda works in the gallery, and Staton works for Atomic Art Services, which helps galleries prepare for shows. Spirit of Mexico is being curated by Deborah Caplow and Antonio Sanchez.

State sea levels could rise considerably by end of century
Melting glacial ice in Greenland and Antarctica, combined with other effects of global climate change, are likely to raise sea levels in parts of Western Washington by the end of this century, though geological forces will offset the rising water in some areas, according to new research.

It’s an election year with no major crises on the horizon, so the UW’s State Relations Director Randy Hodgins is anticipating a timely, 60-day legislative season and a very lean supplemental budget.

Celebrating Plateau cultures at Burke: 'This Place Called Home' and 'Peoples of the Plateau' open Jan. 26
Native American history comes alive in This Place Called Home, the Burke Museum’s new exhibit of artifacts from the cultures of the plateau region, from the museum’s permanent collection. It was created to complement Peoples of the Plateau: The Indian Photographs of Lee Moorhouse, 1898-1915, a traveling display now at the museum. Both exhibits will open Jan. 26.
Shin, Nguyen perform music from around the world
Donna Shin, new flute faculty artist at the School of Music, and pianist Alexandra Nguyen, Eastman School of Music, perform music from around the world in a concert scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in Brechemin Auditorium.
Belcea String Quartet plays Meany Jan. 23
The Belcea String Quartet will make its debut at Meany Hall in a performance at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, playing music by Schubert and Beethoven.

Bionic eyes: Contact lenses with circuits, lights a possible platform for superhuman vision
Movie characters from The Terminator to the Bionic Woman use bionic eyes to zoom in on far-off scenes, have useful facts pop into their field of view or create virtual crosshairs. Now, UW engineers have built similar capacities into a contact lens.

Ex-Oregon State staffers to head equal opportunity, counseling center
The Oregon State University football team may have beaten the Huskies this year, but during the same football season, OSU lost two of its talented staffers to the UW. Prudence Miles arrived in November as the director of equal opportunity and affirmative action, and her partner, Ellen Taylor, followed in December as head of the counseling center.
The Uni-Commuter: One wheel is enough
Greg Harper says his lifelong fondness for unicycles began when he was a child reading Mechanix Illustrated. Now this UW staffer rides a unicycle to work and play. Read about him and see a video of him in action.

UW to participate in national teach-in Jan. 31: Global warming solutions to be discussed
On Jan. 31, about 1,300 institutions nationwide will take part in a teach-in about global warming and its possible solutions. The day’s events will culminate in a town hall-style meeting where elected officials and the audience will discuss solutions to climate change.
‘Climate Change: A Wake Up Call’ is focus of lecture series
King County Executive Ron Sims will consider the social, economic and health inequities of climate change impacts during the lecture "Shared Prosperity in an Age of Global Warming: King county's Vision for an Equitable Clean Energy Economy," Jan. 30 at Pacific Science Center.
