Party in paper
Winnipeg-based artist Paul Butler brought his traveling collage party to the Henry Gallery recently. The collage party is a nomadic workshop in which local artists are invited to produce collages together in a party atmosphere. Top, Allison Manch applies glue to her work. Below left, Gretchen Bennett cuts out the mountain from the label of a water bottle in order to make a larger mountain collage. Below right, Jenny Heishman views her work in progress while convener Butler works in the background. The works created in the Henry’s festive collaboration were sold at the “Summer at the Henry” event.

Research funding tops $1 billion
The UW received more than $1 billion in grant and contract research funding for this past fiscal year, marking the first time it has reached this level. The UW has been the top public university in federal research funding every year since 1974 and among the top five universities, public and private, in federal funding since 1969.

Jeffords heads to UW Bothell
Susan Jeffords, vice provost for global affairs, has been named interim vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW Bothell.
Lennon to be student regent
Erin Lennon, who will be entering her third year in the UW Law School, has been selected as a UW student regent for the 2007-08 academic year. Student regents serve one-year terms.

Research
Alaskan earthquake causes tremors in B.C.
Tremors rippled the landscape of Vancouver Island, the westernmost part of British Columbia, in 2002 during a major Alaskan earthquake. Now, geoscientists at the UW have found clear evidence that the two events were related.
Glass sponges: Once thought extinct, now found nearby
Thirty miles west of Grays Harbor, UW scientists have discovered large colonies of glass sponges thriving on the seafloor. The species of glass sponges capable of building reefs were thought extinct for 100 million years until they were found in recent years in the protected waters of Canada’s Georgia and Hecata straits. The discovery in Washington waters extends the range of reef-building glass sponges into open ocean.
Chemistry center wins $3 million NSF grant
A UW-based chemistry research center, poised to become prominent in science that will lead to new products and processes, has been awarded $3 million a year for five years by the National Science Foundation.

New Computer Science academy welcomes hearing-impaired students
The UW is spearheading a national effort to encourage deaf and hard-of-hearing students to pursue computer science. In June, the Summer Academy for Advancing Deaf & Hard of Hearing in Computing welcomed 10 accomplished students from around the country.

UW Commuter Services is urging staff and faculty to take one car off the road by biking, busing or sharing a ride to campus during the I-5 lane closure. Aug. 10-29.

Every summer, the UW plays host to some of the smartest high school students in the state. The Washington Summer Scholars program, hosted by the Office of Admissions, gives honors program-level students a three-day taste of life as a UW student.
