Minority affairs candidates to speak
The Search Advisory Committee on the Vice President for Minority Affairs and Vice Provost for Diversity has announced that the two final candidates for the position will be giving public presentations to the campus the week of May 14.

Poets Bly, Espada to speak on campus May 10
Well-known American poets Robert Bly and Martin Espada will speak at the UW on Thursday, May 10. Bly will present the 44th annual Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Reading at 8 p.m. in Roethke Auditorium, 130 Kane. And Espada will speak at the second annual Reed-Osheroff Lecture, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in 120 Smith.
Hear clarinet, piano, cello at coming School of Music events
A faculty recital on clarinet, a concert featuring piano and cello and student performances are being offered by the UW School of Music in coming days.

Autism makes recognizing words hard: Children with the disorder use more of their brains on the task
New research indicates that young children with autism have a difficult time recognizing ordinary words and more of their brains are occupied with this kind of task compared to typically developing youngsters.
Star birth goes boom, boom, boom: Three generations of stars form early in globular cluster's life
Astronomers have long thought that globular star clusters had a single "baby boom" of stars early in their lives and then settled into a quiet existence. But new observations using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show that idea might be too simple.

Brian Atwater, affiliate professor of Earth and space sciences and a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Constructing Childhood: Children's art display part of Simpson center project
The Reclaiming Childhood Project, now in its third year, is a collaborative. Interdisciplinary project examining changes in American childhood. The project also has an exhibit of children's art, now on display in the Allen Library.
Washington Weekend: A UW celebration
Red Square smelled of smoke at midday Friday -- barbecue smoke, rising from the grills on which thousands of burgers and dogs got cooked for the enjoyment of faculty and staff during the UW Community Celebration. But that was only one part of the campuswide shindig known as Washington Weekend.
Healthy chemical world lecture series
The first of four lectures on the UW campus takes a look at common consumer products such as air fresheners, dryer sheets, cleaners and hand sanitizers which can have unlisted ingredients that are toxic chemicals.
