Kenyon Chan chosen as UWB chancellor
UW President Mark Emmert and Provost Phyllis Wise have announced that Kenyon S. Chan has been selected as the next chancellor of UW Bothell, subject to approval by the Board of Regents. His appointment will be effective July 1.
Kavanagh to head transport services
Joshua Kavanagh, associate director of Parking and Transportation Services at the University of New Mexico, has been named the director of Transportation Services at the UW.
Vice chancellor for academic affairs named at UWT
Beth Rushing, dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Georgia College and State University, has been named the new chancellor for academic affairs at UW Tacoma, pending approval by the UW Board of Regents.

Two UW profs named Guggenheim Fellows
Two UW professors are among 189 artists, scholars, and scientists chosen as Fellows by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Michael McCann, professor of political science, and Ann Gale, associate professor of art, were selected from among 2,800 applicants for the prestigious fellowships.

Real and important work: Keystone projects connect UW grad students to pressing regional environmental issues
Graduate school is often thought of as a place for lofty thoughts and ethereal intellectual experiences, but the Program on the Environment (PoE) offers a Keystone course that is anything but abstract. Students in the course devote all three quarters of an academic year to working on real-world projects that tackle pressing environmental issues from around the Northwest.

Oceanographer flags dangers of ocean warming, acidification in April 23 lecture
The one-two punch of global warming and a chemical change in ocean waters because of human-caused carbon dioxide is the topic of a lecture by oceanographer Richard Feely at 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, in 120 Kane.

What do we know about how a baby begins to learn, and what are the right ways to teach a young child just learning how to speak? These issues and more will be addressed when the UW Early Childhood Development Lecture Series is held in April and May.
Raymond Jonas named to Costigan endowed professorship
UW History Professor Raymond Jonas, an expert in the field of European and African history, has been named the inaugural Giovanni and Amne Costigan Endowed Professor in History. Jonas will deliver the Costigan Professorship History Lecture, Ethiopia in the American Imagination: When Menelink Came to America, at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 27, in 220 Kane.
Karina Walters to give Samuel E. Kelly Lecture April 26
Karina L. Walters, William B. and Ruth Gerberding endowed professor in the School of Social Work, will present the Samuel E. Kelly Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the Ethnic Cultural Theatre. The talk is titled, From Dis-Placement to Dis-Ease: Embodiment and Expression of Historical Trauma among Indigenous Women.

UW scientists Michael Katze and Evan Eichler are part of international consortium to complete a draft sequence of the rhesus macaque genome.
Debra Schwinn to chair Dept. of Anesthesiology
Debra Schwinn, a leading physician scientist in medical genomics, molecular pharmacology, and cardiac anesthesia, has been named the new chair of the UW Department of Anesthesiology, effective May 1.
Strandness found new way to diagnose vascular disease
Eugene Strandness was the first to use a Doppler to measure blood flow through the arteries.
Ceremony honoring Robert Petersdorf April 30
A ceremony scheduled for April 30 will honor the late Robert G. Petersdorf, a physician and administrator who led the tremendous growth of the UW Department of Medicine in the 1960s and 70s and became a national leader in academic medicine.
