When UW retirees Jerri McCray and Helen Remick established the Service Employees Opportunity Fund, they hoped to help the University's lowest-paid employees or their children to get an education. Now the fund has awarded six scholarships and is included on the Combined Fund Drive's list of charities.

The fund was started from contributions by Remick, retired vice provost for equal opportunity; and McCray, retired associate vice president for facilities services, to benefit UW employees in three categories -- custodians, food service workers and laundry workers. This fall, two $750 scholarships went to the children of custodians. Three $100 scholarships were awarded to children of custodians and one $100 scholarship to a custodian who is also a student.

This is an endowed fund, and a larger endowment makes possible larger scholarships. Contributions to the fund can be made through the Combined Fund Drive, charity code 1479531. Or you can make a gift directly by clicking here.

Applications for the scholarship will always be due at the end of spring term, to be awarded in fall.
