Robert Roseth    roseth@u.washington.edu

Robert Mugerauer, Sid Richardson Centennial Professor at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Architecture, has been selected to be the next dean of the University of Washington College of Architecture and Urban Planning, effective Sept. 1.

The appointment is subject to the approval of the UW Board of Regents.

"I am delighted that our search has resulted in the appointment of Bob Mugerauer to head our excellent College of Architecture and Urban Planning," said UW President Richard L.McCormick. "He is both a scholar and a visionary leader, and I am confident he will be a creative force in directing the college's multifaceted programs in the new century."

Mugerauer received a bachelor's degree in liberal studies from the University of Notre Dame in 1967 and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973.

His field of research has involved built and natural environments in three specific areas: Sustainability and the impact of technology; values, social and cultural factors in design and planning; and theory and current research methods.

He began his academic career at Grand Valley State Colleges in Michigan, where he was on the faculty from 1975 to 1980. From 1980 to 1984, he was at St. Edward's University in Austin, serving first as associate academic dean and later as academic dean, academic vice president and acting executive vice president.

Mugerauer came to the University of Texas in 1985 as a senior lecturer in the School of Architecture, with adjunct appointments in geography, philosophy and American civilization. He became associate professor in 1990 and was named professor and Sid Richardson Centennial Chair in 1990.

Mugerauer was chosen for the School of Architecture's Outstanding Teacher Award in 1993 and again this year. He was selected for the Texas Excellence Teaching Award in 1988-89. In 1996, he was named a Most Important Midcareer Researcher-Teacher by the Environmental Design Research Association. He is on the steering committee of the International Association for Study of Traditional Environments and serves as secretary for the International Association for Philosophy and Environment.

Mugerauer's salary will be $150,000.
