A very special series of paintings and other artworks by Anchorage artist Gerry Conaway is on display at University of Washington Medical Center.

Conaway, who was a member of the UW art faculty in the 1960s and whose artwork is included in the Smithsonian's Permanent Collection, received a heart transplant at UW Medical Center in December 1998.

The art on display was inspired by his heart transplant. The works include "The Night the Transplants Fell in Seattle," executed in betadine (a dye-like solution used for medical purposes) and paint. They evoke the artist's humorous reverence for the medical technology and human compassion that saved his life and enabled him to continue making art.

The exhibit is on display from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays until Aug. 6, off the lobby of the Medical Center, 1959 N.E. Pacific. For more information contact Amy Hamblin, art program director, at (206) 598-6308.
